Olu Jacobs (1942-2026): Tributes

 

Since the news of the sad passing of iconic actor Olu Jacobs, the Lion of Lufudo, on the 16th of September, tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans. Olu Jacobs studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in England and, after an active acting career in the BBC, theatre & international films, returned to Nigeria to pave the way for future Nigerian actors & actresses. Active in the NTA, Nigerian theatre, and Nollywood films, Olu Jacobs co-founded the Lufudo Group and the later Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, with his wife & fellow thespian, Joke Silva. 

From veteran filmmaker Tunde Kelani, who first met him in London in 1978: 

He was a standard of excellence, a true colossus, a founding patriarch of modern Nigerian screen performance. His death marks the passage of a titan who left an indelible mark on my life and career.

Olu Jacobs is the only person I respect in the industry as my senior. The curtain has come down, but your legacy will remain, Chief Olu Jacobs. May your soul rest in peace.

A Night of Tributes honouring the late actor will take place on 30th September at the Glover Memorial Hall, Marina, Lagos. The funeral will be held on 2nd October at This Present House, Lekki, Lagos.
