'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' Earns a Staggering $44 Million At Box Office

A single mother and her two children move to a new town and soon discover they have a connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. 

The 4th  installment of the sci-fi-comedy  franchise, which began with the original 1984 film, written by 'Saturday Night Live' alum Dan Aykroyd (who also starred in the film) and Harold Ramis  and directed by Ivan Reitman; earned an estimated $44 million at the American box office last weekend. Definitely not a bad way for  Sony to end 2021, especially as its other expected blockbuster 'Spiderman: No Way Home' will be released next month. 

The new installment stars Paul Rudd,  McKenna Grace and Finn Woldhard, with Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Dan Aykroyd and Sigourney Weaver reprising their roles as the original Ghostbusters crew- Venkman, Winston, Dana, Ray and Janine  from the first two films. 

 It is set 32 years after the events of Ghostbusters II and directed by Jason Reitman,  the son of the original films'  director.
