Nigerian Cinema Loses Baba Suwe
Nigerian comedian and actor Babatunde Nurudeen Omidina, popularly known by his stage name 'Baba Suwe' has passed on. The sad news was confirmed by the President of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Producers and his long-standing collegue Bolaji Amusan, known popularly as 'Mr Latin', who was told by the son of the deceased via a phonecall. So far, the cause of death has not been made public. He was 63.
Known for his long running persona of an eccentric old man with a black smeared face, Omidina starred in and produced many Yoruba films after beginning his career in 1971. Born on August 22nd, 1958, Omidina had his primary education at Jamaitul Islamial Primary School in Lagos and Children Boarding School, Osogbo before he proceeded to Adekanbi Commercial High School at Mile 12, Lagos, obtaining his West African School Certificate from Ifeoluwa Grammar School in Osogbo, Osun state. He brought rib cracking comedy in all he films he starred and produced, influencing many other comic actors.
In 2019, Baba Suwe received treatment for an acute illness abroad, the trip and treatment sponsored by Reverend Mother Esther Ajayi, the Iya Aladura of the Love of Christ Generation Church, C&S.
A Muslim, it is expected that Baba Suwe will be buried according to Islamic rites.
