Congratulations 2023 AMVCA Winners

A shout out to  this year’s winners of the 9th edition African Magic Viewers Choice Awards, held last Sunday at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island. Sure the various outfits the attendees graced the red carpet with were glamourous and bedazzling, the highlight of the event was the unveiling of the recipients of the various awards.

Kunle Afolayan’s  2022 fantasy epic Aníkúlápó (“Death in one’s pouch”) bagged awards that night for the following:

Best Writer

Best Soundtrack

Best Sound Editor

Best Indigenous Language (Yoruba)

and for Best Overall Movie

Afolayan, surrounded by the cast and his mentor, veteran film maker and director Tunde Kelani, said: “I want to say a big thank you to the cast and crew, Kunle Remi and co., to MNET and the AMVCA; we promise to come back next year.”

Still makes one wonder just WHY the film’s Oscar nomination submission  for Best Foreign Film was denied.

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo received the much deserved Industry Merit award for her contributions to the Nollywood industry, giving an emotional speech as she was applauded by her colleagues. “I appreciate my colleagues who work tirelessly and often times without recognition. I appreciate my family who have always surrounded me with love and acceptance.”

Other winners this year include Broda Shaggi (Samuel Perry) for Best Actor in a Comedy (Movie or T.V), Best Actress in that category went to Bimbo Ademoye, breaking Funmi Akindele’s 5 year streak, Best Actor and Actress for Drama (Movie or T.V) going to BB Naija’s Tobi Bakre (Brotherhood) and Osas Ighodaro (Man of God) respectively. Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively went to  Abdisattar Ahmed (Gacal) and Efe Irele (Four Four Forty Four) and Best Costume Designer went to Adeola Art-Alade for “The Real Housewives of Lagos”.

All together  a great night. Congratulations winners!
