 With this year's World Cup behind us — congratulations to the Spanish National team! — let's go down memory lane at the best World Cup Songs/Anthems by year.

            USA   '94 official song: 'Gloryland' 

Gloryland's chorus was meant to signify American patriotism and optimism. Sung by pop veteran Daryl Hall of 'Hall & Oates' and the gospel group The Sounds of Blackness, it was a fusion of pop-rock, jazz, and saxophone arrangements.

France '98 official song:  'La Copa De La Vida (The Cup of Life).'

                             

                                     

Fusing samba, salsa, and mambo, The Cup of Life marked the moment Latin pop crossed over into the Anglo-American mainstream; English and Spanish versions were released. 

Performed by Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin, The Cup of Life is regarded as the greatest World Cup theme song of all time, for its inspirational, energetic, and patriotic tones, football-heavy message, and its battle-like chorus, “Go, go, go!  Ale, ale, ale!" 

 It was a massive global and commercial hit for Martin, who also performed it live at the 1999 Grammy Awards &  is one of the tracks on his 4th studio album, Vuelve.

 France '98 Official Anthem:  'La Cour Des Grands (Do You Mind If I Play).'

                                  

The popular song, sung entirely in French, represented core values, diversity, and geopolitical unity. Performed by Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour and Belgian singer/songwriter Axelle Red, it served as France '98's official ceremonial anthem, emotional and catchy.

    Korea-Japan 2002 Official Song: 'Boom'

                                                      

 Boom marked the first time the World Cup would be hosted in Asia, co-hosted by South Korea and Japan.  Performed by American singer Anastacia, Boom was an upbeat, energetic electronic dance-rock song designed to match the high-octane atmosphere of global football. It is included in The Official Album of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and a collector's edition of Freak of Nature, Anastacia's 2nd studio album. MTV Italy declared Boom as its favourite World Cup song in 2014.

Germany 2006 Official Song: 'The Time of Our Lives' 

                                  

Performed by the multinational group Il Divo and veteran R&B Grammy winner Toni Braxton, the heartfelt song was a sweeping orchestral arrangement built around the emotional themes of competitive glory, dedication, and heartbreak.  The Time of Our Lives was a commercial hit in Europe.

 Germany 2006 Official Anthem:  'Zeit, Dass Sich Was Dreht (Celebrate The Day)' 

                             

Compared to the heartfelt, soulful The Time of Our Lives, the upbeat anthem captured the joyful, celebratory spirit of the World Cup.  Performed by German pop singer Herbert Grönemeyer and Malian singing duo Amadou & Mariam in German, French, & Bambara, the anthem was a fusion of European rock and West African rhythms, designed for stadium clapping and chanting. A massive hit in Germany, it peaked at Number 1 on the German Singles Chart & Number 5 in Austria.

 South Africa 2010 official Song: 'Waka Waka- It's Time For Africa'

                             

  

The catchy 'Waka, Waka' sampled the classic 1986 song, Zamina Mina (Zangaléwa), by the Cameroonian Makossa group Golden Sounds. Performed by Colombian singer Shakira and South African group Freshlyground, 'Waka, Waka' was a massive best-selling global hit, with over 15 million digital downloads. The inspiring song aimed at encouraging players and listeners to pick themselves up after a fall and always stay resilient & was a fusion of Colombian pop-rock, Euro-dance electronics, and Central/South African beats.  It also marked the first time the World Cup was hosted in Africa.

Brazil 2014 Official Song, 'We Are One- Ole, Ola' 

                                                

Inspired by the host country's carnival culture, the highly successful song was a fusion of Latin-pop, rap, and Samba-Reggae, performed by rapper Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez, and Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. It emphasised Global Unity and the spirit of resilience.

  Russia 2018 Official Song,  'Live It Up' 

                                     

Marking Russia's first time hosting the World Cup, the theme song was performed by American singer Nicky Jam, veteran rapper Will Smith, and Kosovo-Albanian singer Era Istrefi. The highly energised official song was a mixture of rap, Caribbean ska, Latin urban music, and modern European dance-pop. Its message was the unity of different nationalities together under a single sporting passion, football.

      Russia 2018 Official Anthem, 'Colors'  

                                            

Performed by Jason Derulo, the catchy fan favourite  Colors was the official Coca-Cola promotional anthem for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Memorable for its acoustic guitar sounds and uplifting dance beat, its themes were global unity, cultural diversity, national pride, and racial equality, with Derulo urging the teams to take pride in their roots and proudly represent their individual countries. The song was highly praised for its football-heavy message that resonated with people across the globe, overshadowing 'Live It Up'.

 Qatar 2022 Official Song:  'Hayya, Hayya (Come, Come)-Better Together'

                                          

  

Marking the first time the World Cup will be hosted in an Arab country, Qatar 2022's inspiring theme song was performed by American singer Trinidad Cardona, our very own Davido, and Qatari singer AISHA. Listeners were treated to a fusion of Afrobeats, American pop, and Middle Eastern vocals, with Arabian Oud, cello, flute, and modern African beats. 

 Its heartfelt message emphasised how nations were a lot better and stronger when united as one, rather than apart, calling for global harmony, peace, and universal brotherhood and overcoming struggles. Within 24 hours of its first release, the song gained over 3.4 million views on YouTube and millions of global plays. 

While Femi Kuti was the first Nigerian artist to perform at a World Cup Opening ceremony (South Africa 2010), Davido became the first Nigerian artist to perform at a World Cup Closing ceremony, singing 'Hayya, Hayya' with Cardona and AISHA on stage.
