'The Man Died' Now Streaming on Amazon Prime Video

 Based on Prof. Wole Soyinka's harrowing 1972  prison memoir of the same name, The Man Died is a drama film recounting Soyinka's detainment in Kaduna prison- without trial- during the Nigerian Civil War. 

The Nobel laureate was arrested in August 1967 and released in October 1969, a few months before the war ended. The book documented his experiences and efforts to stay focused while in solitary confinement in a 4-by-8 cell by writing, using improvised paper (toilet paper, cigarette packs, etc) and homemade ink. 

The film adaptation starred Wale Ojo as Prof. Soyinka, Abraham Ampka as his best friend, Femi Johnson, Kelvinmary Ndukwe as poet  Christopher Okigbo, Temilolu Fosudo as  Bola Ige, Sam Dede as Boss Yisa, Norbert Young as the Superintendent, & Francis Onwochei as the Police Commissioner.  It was produced by Femi Odugbemi & directed by Awam Amkpa. 

It premiered on July 12, 2024, in Lagos, to commemorate Soyinka's 90th birthday; screened at The Africa Centre in London and featured at the African Film Festival in London later that year. It was also screened on Day 4- October 9th 2024-  of the 8th edition of the Quramo Festival of Words (Qfest), held at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island.
