A Different World (2.0): September 24th on Netflix
A Different World, the spinoff of The Cosby Show, is returning with a new generation of students and some familiar alumni.
When the original late 80's sitcom first hit screens, the main character was Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet), who attends her parents' alma mater, the fictional, historically black college Hillman in Virginia.
After Bonet's departure at the end of Season 1, the focus shifted to her snooty classmate, Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), her personal growth, her romance, and eventual marriage to Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison). The show also focused on various students' experiences and personal problems, & addressed real-time issues, including racism, sexual harassment, students struggling financially, and the AIDS stigma.
The main character in the upcoming continuation of the sitcom is Dwayne & Whitley's daughter & youngest child, Deborah, played by Maleah Joi Moon, who arrives at Hillman to create her own legacy, out of her parents' shadow.
Old cast members reprising their roles- besides Guy and Hardison- include; Dawnn Lewis as Jalessa (Denise's former roommate), Hilman professor and Jalessa's husband, Colonel Taylor (Glynn Turman), former hippie turned lawyer, Freddie (Cree Summer), her former roommate, now doctor, Kim (Charlene Brown) and Dwayne's best friend and former roommate, Ron (Darryl M. Bell).
In Season 1, the theme song of the same title was sung by Phoebe Snow; in Seasons 2 to 5, by the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin; and by Boyz II Men & Terence Forsythe in Season 6. This time, Gen Z and old fans will be treated to Brandy Norwood's voice singing the familiar lyrics.
A Different World (2.0) will debut on Netflix on September 24, the same date the original debuted in 1987, and is also currently on Netflix. TRAILER
