IN MEMORIAM... ALAN RICKMAN

Today makes a year since the very sad passing of English actor and director Alan Rickman who, during his life time, made his mark on stage and the silver screen. After his role as Tybalt in a stage production of Romeo and Juliet in 1978, Rickman went on to play several memorable roles...

Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988)

                                The Sheriff of Nottingham in
                                Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves (1991)

Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility (1995)

Grigori Rasputin in Rasputin : Dark Servant of Destiny (1996)

Eamon De Valera in  Michael Collins (1996)

Dr. Alfred Blalock in Something The Lord Made (2004)

President Ronald Reagan  in  The Butler (2013)

However Rickman is mostly be remembered for his portrayal of J.K Rowling's Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film adaptations: The Philosopher's Stone (2001), The Chamber of Secrets (2002), The Prisoner of Azkaban(2004), The Goblet of Fire(2005)The Order of The Phoenix(2007), The Half-Blood Prince(2009) and The Deadly Hallows Part I & II (2010). And as hard as it to believe except by die-hard Harry Potter fans who read the books more than once, Rickman's portrayal of Harry's adversary-while mostly accurate- was just a little less cold blooded than he was described in the books and the big reveal of his most kept secret in The Deathly Hallows made this complicated character more of an anti-hero than an actual villain.

Rickman was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and received his training in acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. For his role as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves, he bagged a BAFTA award, then a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Satellite Award for his role as Rasputin; an MTV Movie Award, a People's Choice Award, a San Diego Film Critics Society Award for his performance as Snape in The Deathly Hallows Part II  and a Scream Award for The Half-Blood Prince.

He is survived by his longtime companion, later wife, Rima Horton.
