Farewell Baba Sala!
One of Nigeria's last remaining old-school comedians and dramatist/ filmmaker, Baba Sala has passed away. According to reports, Baba Sala died last night in his sleep at his home in Ilesha, Osun State. He was 82.
Born Moses Olaiya in 1936, Baba Sala will be forever remembered as the founder of modern Nigerian comedy and popularised TV and theatre acting. His long-running gimmicks were his pipes, oversized glasses, wooden bow ties, vaudeville-style jackets and comical hats.
Baba Sala started his career as a highlife musician. Music maestro King Sunny Ade was the lead guitarist of his band, The Federal Rhythm Dandies before going solo. His comedy sketches appeared on stage and on television and he also wrote and produced several movies, but got discouraged and disillusioned when his works constantly got pirated... what else is new?
There will never be another Baba Sala, he was not only super talented but super funny.
May he rest in peace.
