Photo Of The Week: "The 1851 Agidingbi Chess Game”

"The 1851 Agidingbi Chess Game”, is a history themed  chessboard set invented  by  Oludamola Adebowale, a Nigerian  historian, curator  and founder of ASIRI magazine.

It is a re-enaction of the  1851 Bombardment of Lagos by the British Naval forces, which led to the annexation of Lagos in 1861. One set  depicts  the Oba of Lagos (King), the Ereulu- Kuti (Queen), the Adamu Eyo (Rook), the Eletu-Odibo (Bishop), Adagbon (Knight) and the Omo Ogun Eko (Pawns).  The  other set depicts the British King, Queen, Bishop  and their naval officers. It is the first indigenous variant of the classic chess game.

It is currently on display at Freedom Park, Lagos.
