'Beloved' Author Toni Morrison Passes On


American Nobel Laureate, essayist and teacher   Toni Morrison, has passed on. According to her publisher, Morrison died yesterday from pneumonia at Montefiore Medical Centre in the Bronx, New York. She was 88 years old.

A retired professor of Literature at Princeton University, she was the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993.  Her novel Beloved won the Pulitzer Prize For Fiction in 1988 and made into a film in 1998. Her other works include Jazz, Paradise (second and third book under the 'Beloved' trilogy', Song of Solomon,  Love and Home; as well as several essays and articles. Morrison bought black literature to the mainstream, her theme being the racial tension between African Americans and Caucasians in America.
