PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp
On this day in 1945; the Soviet Union's Red Army liberated Holocaust survivors from Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest and most notorious concentration death camp, where more than 1.1 million prisoners died. The battle scarred soldiers were deeply shocked at the levels of atrocities committed by the Nazis. Several of the survivors were very ill and emaciated; and the camp littered with corpses, human hair and discarded clothes.
January 27th is now regarded as Holocaust Remembrance Day.
