'Chucky': A Look At New Syfy T.V Series
Following the not so great 'Child's Play' reboot film, we now have the new T.V series 'Chucky', currently in its second episode on Syfy.
Fans of the 'Child's Play' franchise since the first film's debut in 1988, will no doubt be thrilled; as this series is a direct follow-up of 2017 'Cult of Chucky', written and directed by Don Mancini, the creator of the franchise. Mancini actually brought the franchise back to its horror roots with 2013 'Curse of Chucky', which served as a premise for the events of its successor and a flashback scene served as a short prequel to the first film's opening scene. The best part, 'Curse of Chucky' and 'Cult of Chucky' saw the return of former child actor, Alex Vincent who played Chucky's first owner, Andy Barclay and Christine Elise who played Andy's foster sister Kyle in 'Child's Play 2'.
In 'Cult of Chucky', Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif who also played Chucky's human form, Charles Lee Ray) unleashed something worse than his long murder count; he pulled a Lord Voldermont by transferring parts of his soul (via a spell from a voodoo website) into a number of Good Guy dolls before finally possessing his human host, Nica Pierce (played by Brad Dourif's daughter, Fiona Dourif), who first appeared in 'Curse of Chucky'.
In 'Chucky', Don Mancini sends Chucky back to his hometown, Hackensack, New Jersey; looking at a new wave of murders and Charlie's origins before he ever became the Lakeshore Strangler. The first episode, 'Death By Misadventure' (which aired on the 12th of October 2021), saw the return of Brad Dourif as Chucky, who is bought at a yard sale by 14 year old Jake Wheeler ( Zackary Arthur); a lonely boy who makes rather eerie doll sculptures and harassed by bullies; his chief tormentors his own cousin Junior (Teo Briones) , Junior's bitchy girlfriend Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and his own father Lucas ('Final Destination' and 'Casper' alum, Devon Sava, also playing Lucas' twin brother/Junior's dad, Logan). Chucky wastes no time dealing with Lucas, feeling he was doing Jake a favour and now has his eye on Lexy, who he termed 'a bitch' and humiliated via a fake ventriloquist act at the school's talent show.
Episode 2, ' Give Me Something Good To Eat', Jake now lives with his uncle and aunt, much to Junior's displeasure. Chucky claims another victim, to Jake's horror, refusing to accept Chucky's claims of innocence. Chucky appeared to have a somewhat protective attitude towards Jake; angry to see him beaten and bullied for his sexuality as he had a 'queer kid' (making 2004 'Seed of Chucky' canon). Surprisingly, Chucky is outraged by Lexy's very callous act at Oliver's Halloween party- she dressed up as Lucas and reenacted his death by electrocution- with every one except Jake's crush Devon (Bjornvin Arnason) and Junior finding it funny. What a horrible girl! Of course, being the Mayor's daughter, Lexy simply assumes she can do what she likes with NO repercussions. Start looking over your shoulder, cow; though probably no viewer wishes to see you dead.
Chucky now wants to have a sidekick, in the guise of helping Jake punish his tormentors. With Lexy's latest prank, if one can call that wicked display a prank, Jake just might become a killer. Will he listen to Chucky? Who will believe his vintage Good Guy doll contains the soul of a serial killer, he can't tell anyone just yet.
What can save him now is his own conscience and finding a way of stopping Chucky before it's too late. But of course he can't do it alone, he needs the two people that are equipped to. And that's Andy and Kyle; who we hope to see before Season 1 ends. So far, we know the following:
-Andy somehow managed to escape the institution after the carnage in 'Cult of Chucky'; as he was obviously the man who asked Jake over phone to check Chucky's batteries.
-Jake's father Lucas became abusive towards Jake after the loss of Jake's mother.
-The mother of Devon, the boy Jake is interested in, is the lead detective in the murder case.
-Chucky's parents were murdered.
-Chucky's psychopathic traits started as a child.
-According to Don Mancini, Andy and Chucky will have a final face-off.
-Jake's aunt Bree has a secret, according to Chucky.
What we DON'T know yet:
-How many times Chucky has divided his soul so far.
-If Andy or Kyle has destroyed the original stitched Chucky head.
-If Glen, Chucky and Tiffany's son, will join them on their rampage or ally with Andy and Kyle in bringing them down.
Will Glen's sister Glenda make an apperance?
-What role will Nica play? Will she be free of Chucky's possession?
7 more episodes to find that out.
