Rooney Mara & Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Mary Magdalene’

  

         

Mary Magdalene has been a much debated subject and one of the most misunderstood biblical figures in history, with different accounts of her as a person and her exact relationship with Jesus Christ and his disciples.  She played a prominent role in the Da Vinci Code, the 1988 movie The Last Temptation of Christ (both generating much controversy) and the 2016 movie Risen, which told the story of Jesus Christ at a completely different angle. 

The upcoming historical drama Mary Magdalene aims to tell the story of Jesus Christ’s ministry through Mary’s eyes and paint an accurate picture of the woman who has remained a complex and enigmatic figure for centuries. 

Directed by Garth Davis, Rooney Mara (The Social Network) plays Mary Magdalene and Joachim Phoenix (Walk the Line) as Jesus Christ. 

Other cast members include Nigerian- British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)  who plays Simon Peter and French Algerian actor Tahir Rahim who plays Judas. Start betting how many viewers will be in favour and against these choices and if it would be a bigger deal than casting Rooney and Joachim who are currently dating. Or simply do the most important thing, wonder how this anticipated biopic will turn out! 

Mary Magdalene is set to be released in the USA by Columbia Pictures and in the United Kingdom by Universal Pictures.
