According to reports,
the latest Star Wars instalment- The Last
Jedi- opened with a whooping $220 million weekend at 4,232 North American
sites — the second-highest opening weekend of all time, trailing only the $248
million launch of 2015’s The Force
Awakens. With international grosses hitting $230 million, The Last Jedi totalled $450 million
worldwide.
According to Paul
Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore, “Truly in a class by
themselves, the movies of the Star Wars franchise
continue to re-write the history books as to what is possible in terms of
box office performance.”
The
Last Jedi reunited Carrie Fisher (Leia), Mark Hamill (Luke
Skywalker), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (former
Star trooper Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), and Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader
Snoke). New cast members were Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o, Laura Dern, Kelly
Marie Tran and Bernie del Toro. Sadly it was the final appearance of Star Wars veteran Carrie
Fisher as Princess/General Leia Organa, as the actress passed away on the 27th
of December last year. Another Star Wars veteran, Kenny Baker who played R2-D2, passed away in 2016, on the 13th of August.
