Mel Gibson To Direct 'Lethal Weapon 5'
Veteran actor and director Mel Gibson is set to put his directorial skills to good use again in the 5th installment of the buddy cop/ action comedy fanchise; Lethal Weapon 5. The original 1987 film and its three sequels starred him and fellow veteran, Danny Glover; the pair playing unstable wild card Martin Riggs and the aging, world weary Roger Murtaugh. A television series based on the franchise starred Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans as the mismatched pair, running for 3 seasons (2016 -2019) on Fox channel.
Gibson replaces the late Richard Donner (1930-2021) who directed the previous 4 installments and was working on the 5th before his death in July. Speaking at an Experience With...event in London on Sunday, Gibson said, "The man who directed all the 'Lethal' films Richard Donner, he was a big guy. He was developing the screenplay and he was pretty fat along with it. And he said to me one day: 'Listen kid, if I kick the bucket you will do it.' And I said, 'shut up.' But he did indeed pass away. But he ask me to do it and at the time I didn't say anything. He said it to his wife and to the studio and the producer. So I will be directing the fifth one."
Gibson, now 65, is reportedly going to reprise the role of Riggs, but it hasn't been confirmed if Glover, now 75, will return as Murtaugh.
